RUMOR: Apple may be working on their own iPhone maps app

Apple has posted a job listing for an iPhone software engineer to join the iPhone and iPod Touch Maps team with the goal of taking the iPhone’s built-in maps app to “the next level.”

From the job listing:

We want to take Maps to the next level, rethink how users use Maps and change the way people find things. We want to do this in a seamless, highly interactive and enjoyable way. We’ve only just started.

There have been rumors for a while now that Apple will be creating their own maps app sometime in the future.  Google has been providing maps on the iPhone and iPod Touch, but now that they have their own phone OS, Android, rumors have been spreading around about Apple wanting to separate itself form their dependance on Google Maps.  Speculation increased after Apple recently acquired the mapping company Placebase.  And the former CEO of Placebase is now part of Apple’s “Geo Team.”
