RUMOR: Steam Gaming Platform Coming to Mac OS X

Evidence suggests that Valve is preparing a Mac version of the Steam gaming platform. Today, Windows users were given the option of downloading a new beta interface, featuring changes like a WebKit-based browser, an improved appearance and customizable game groups. Buried within the Steam/Graphics folder, however, are images for 10 Mac-specific buttons. Within Steam/Resource/Menus, there is also a new “osx.menu” file.
Steam is used to distribute not only Valve’s popular games like Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2, but it has also become a very popular place to purchase third-party games. But even if Steam comes to Mac, any game made for Windows would still need to be ported individually for it to work on OS X. This could be a difficult proposition as a result of different architectures and drivers, so the Mac version would most likely have a much smaller game selection at launch. And of course we don’t even know when or if it will be launched, so we’ll just have to wait and see. I’ll keep you updated.
