Review: Street Fighter IV for iPhone & iPod Touch

One of the most popular fighting game series has come to the iPhone and iPod touch with Street Fighter IV.  It features impressive graphics and sounds that are almost identical to the console version.  Street Fighter IV is a must-have for any fan of the series, and I’m sure many newcomers will enjoy it too.

You can choose from 8 different characters, Ryu, Ken, Blanka, Guile, Chun-Li, M. Bison, Dhalsim and Abel.  Each character has his own fighting style and moves.

There are four different Solo Play modes to choose from, Tournament, Dojo, Free-Sparring and Training Room.  Anyone familiar with the game should be able to jump right into Tournament mode without a problem.  New players should practice their moves in Dojo mode first.  In Dojo mode, you complete challenges by practicing special moves and combos.  You learn what each move’s strengths and weaknesses are and when you should use them.  Learning these tricks can be very helpful if you want to make it far in Tournament mode.

The touch controls aren’t bad once you get used to them.  Since there are no physical buttons to feel, I find myself keeping an eye on the touchscreen controls to make sure my thumbs don’t move off them.  I’ll admit this was a little annoying at first, but after playing for a while it really starts to feel natural.  One thing I really like is that all of the controls are customizable.  You can move the buttons anywhere you want on the screen and adjust their level of transparency.  This is a cool feature that I haven’t seen in other iPhone games.

There is multiplayer support for Head-to-Head battle over Bluetooth.  Although I am excited about this option, I really hope they come out with an update for online play.  Being able to challenge people from all over the world would be awesome.

Street Fighter IV is well worth the $9.99 price.  CAPCOM has done a great job at bringing this game to the iPhone.  I recommend this game to everyone who is a fan of the Street Fighter series or anyone who enjoys 2-D fighter games.  I’m sure you will not be disappointed.

Check out Street Fighter IV in the App Store.
