Review: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 for iPhone

Being a huge fan of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 when it was originally released 10 years ago, I was excited to find out it was coming to the iPhone. Now, after spending many hours playing it on the iPhone, I can say that I’m not disappointed. The graphics and gameplay are fantastic!
For those of you who haven’t played THPS2, the object is to earn money so you can unlock new boards, levels and experience points. You can also earn achievements and high scores. Each level has a secret video to find, and you will also need to collect the letters S-K-A-T-E.
The controls are very simple. You have a directional pad on the left side of the screen and grind, flip, ollie and grab buttons on the right. They feel very natural so it didn’t take long to start showing off my skills I learned back in the day.
The graphics look great and the movement is very smooth. I haven’t had it slow down or freeze the entire time I’ve been playing. One thing I feel they could have improved on was the soundtrack. I loved the soundtrack from the original THPS2, and I’m not sure why they decided to go with another one. The songs aren’t bad, I guess it’s just not what I was expecting. It would have been nice if they gave an option to play music from your iPod library, maybe that’s something they plan on doing with an update.
One thing this game is lacking is multiplayer. I would love to have the ability to play over bluetooth or even the Internet. I can live without having multiplayer though, THPS2 still has a lot to offer. Maybe at least some online high scores though. One of the most fun things to me about playing games like this is trying to beat the scores of friends and others around the world.
Overall, THPS2 is a great game for the iPhone. I’m sure anyone who loved the original on computer or console will instantly be able to pick up their skills where they left off. And for all the newcomers, THPS2 is one of the best skateboarding games of all time, you must try it.
THPS2 cost $9.99 and is available in the App Store.
