AT&T Offering Mobile Hotspot on iPhone 4 for $45, Or Use MyWi for Free

Posted on March 3, 2011 by

Apple announced yesterday that iOS 4.3, which will be available March 11, will bring personal hotspot capability to GSM iPhone 4s. AT&T confirmed to Phone Scoop that the company will support the mobile hotspot feature on launch, unlike the over year delay on USB/Bluetooth tethering support. To use the personal hotspot feature, customers will need to subscribe to the DataPro 4GB data plan for $45 a month.

If you would rather get this feature for free, there is an app for jailbroken iPhones called MyWi which lets you turn your iPhone into a Wi-Fi access point.  MyWi gives you the ability to use your iPhone’s 3G connection with your iPad or any computer with Wi-Fi.  It also enables Internet tethering over USB and Bluetooth.

I,m confused, the mywi agreement statement says you will have to pay the monthly fee to ATT it also states that in the FAQ segment. Is that just to cover their butts? Just trying to figure this jailbreak stuff out. I dont need a suprise on my bill. Can someone explain.

    Thanks, Newbe

I’m sure it’s just to cover themselves from legal issues. If you don’t have an unlimited plan, you will want to be careful using MyWi, because if you go over your data limit, AT&T will charge you extra. Since all Verizon iPhone customers currently have the unlimited plan, they don’t have to worry about any extra fees. And if you have the discontinued $30 AT&T unlimited plan, you don’t have to worry either. But you will not be charged for the tethering/WiFi hotspot fee when using MyWi.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions. MyWi really is a great app, I highly recommend it. It has a free trial too.
