Resetting a lost password in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is pretty easy. Just follow these steps and you will be able to log onto your account again.

  1. Hold down the “Option” key at boot and select the “Recovery HD” disk
  2. Once the “Mac OS X Utilities” menue appears, click on the “Utilities” menue and select “Terminal”
  3. Type the following:

    resetpassword

  4. Once the Reset Password utility loads, select your user account and then enter a password (don’t forget it this time)

To reset a password in previous versions of Mac OS X, boot from the install DVD by holding down the “C” key. Instead of going to “Terminal,” you will see a “Reset Password” option in the “Utilities” menu. Then just follow Step 4.
