DigiTimes Makes Crazy Claim that Apple Will Ship iPad 3 in March and iPad 4 in October

I would love to just ignore a rumor like this, but I thought it was important to explain how crazy it is. DigiTimes says that Apple will ship an iPad 3 in March 2012 and then an iPad 4 with “killer applications” in October 2012. This sounds almost exactly like DigiTimes’ rumor from last year, which I also predicted to be wrong….and it turns out I was correct.
Releasing two new iPads in one year would not be a typical move by Apple and I don’t see it happening. Apple has never released more than one new iPhone a year since it launched in 2007, and in the almost two years of the iPad, Apple has also only released one new model a year. There is absolutely no good reason or evidence for Apple to change their product cycle this year. While manufactures like Asus and Motorola may have to release multiple tablets, it doesn’t make as much sense for Apple to do the same. Apple, unlike Asus and Motorola, continues to make money off the consumer even after the sale of the iPad with purchases of apps, music, movies, TV shows, books and magazines.
Just like Steve Jobs and I said that 2011 would be the year of the iPad 2, I believe 2012 will be the year of the iPad 3….not the iPad 3 and iPad 4. Hopefully 2012 will also be the year people stop believing these crazy rumors from DigiTimes.
By the way, what are “killer applications” anyway? What, does DigiTimes believe Apple will release an iPad 4 with an exclusive “Killer App Store”? It’s just more proof that they don’t know what they’re talking about.
