Apple Sells 1.4 Million Apple TVs in Q1 2012

Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed yesterday that the Apple TV is doing pretty well, with 2.8 million devices sold last year. 1.4 million sold in just the last quarter, most likely due to Christmas sales and some awesome new features introduced in iOS 5 like AirPlay mirroring. Cook reiterated that Apple TV was still a just a hobby, but one he can’t live without.

Our Apple TV product is doing quite well… but in the scheme of things, we still classify Apple TV as a hobby. We continue to add things to it. If you’re using the latest one — I don’t know about you, but I can’t live without it.

I agree with Cook, the Apple TV is the only device I use on my TV and I couldn’t live without it. I love the simplicity and integration with all my other Apple devices. And using apps like Air Video with the Apple TV lets you easily stream just about any video format from your iOS device using AirPlay. It was probably the best $99 I ever spent.

I know there have been a lot of rumors lately of an Apple-branded TV, but I honestly don’t think it will come anytime soon. Like I’ve said before, I think Apple will continue to add features to the Apple TV device instead. I think the rumor of a Siri controlled TV is dumb and not how Steve Jobs planned to revolutionize television. I believe his plan has more to do with the delivery of content so people can get away from the cable and satellite companies.
