RUMOR: Apple Working on Game Controller for iOS Devices

Posted on April 2, 2012 by

We’ve seen some third party controllers for iPhone and iPad, but nothing has caught on much with developers yet. But with the capability to AirPlay games to your Apple TV, a controller with physical buttons is the only thing holding Apple back from competing with game consoles. Some games like Real Racing 2 HD work okay without physical buttons, but games that require more than the gyroscope to control can be difficult.

Vivek Gowri of AnandTech says Apple is working on bringing a controller to the market:

While controller support in Android in its infancy at best, it’s more than iOS currently offers. I know of an internal Apple project to bring a physical controller to market, but whether or not it will ever see the light of day remains to be seen. As smartphones and tablets come close to equalling the performance of current game consoles, I feel like the controller problem must be addressed.

The picture above is from a Kickstarter project. It’s an open source, Bluetooth portable game controller for smartphones and tablets. Check it out here if you’re interested.
