After Apple launched the iPad, Steve Jobs revealed that they actually started development on what became the iPad prior to working on the iPhone. Network World was able to get a portion of a deposition Apple designer Jony Ive gave last December, and he said Apple was working on tablet prototypes “sometime between 2002 and 2004.”

The document also included some photos of a tablet computer prototype. The images show a device which looks like a mix between the current iPad and the white MacBook/iBook.
