Apple purchased a small Silicon Valley startup, WifiSLAM. The company specializes in extending location data and positioning to indoor locations using WiFi triangulation. This can be used when GPS information is not available, and is expected to supplement Apple’s Maps app and compete with Google’s crowdsourced “Indoor Maps” project. According to the Wall Street Journal, the deal was worth $20 million.

WifiSLAM says its technology can locate users to within 2.5 meters and provides step-by-step indoor navigation and proximity-based social networking. Apple confirmed the deal, but didn’t share any plans.
