Review: Nike+ GPS for iPhone

Engadget has reviewed Nike’s new iPhone app, Nike+ GPS. This run-tracking app cost $1.99 and is available in the App Store. This Nike+ app does not require special Nike shoes with the sensor, it uses the iPhone’s GPS instead.

From Engadget:

Nike’s dalliances with technology should be familiar to our readers by now, with the crowning jewel of course being the Nike+ run-tracking software that pairs a shoe-mounted sensor with your iPhone or iPod. Well, it was. The gargantuan sportswear company is moving with the times and throwing the hardware away with the introduction of its all-new Nike+ GPS application. No longer restricting our running shoe choice is groovy, but the app itself has the even loftier aim of simultaneously acting as your fitness guru, motivator and record keeper. And all it asks in return is access to the accelerometer and GPS modules in your iOS 4-equipped iPhone or iPod touch. So, let’s see how this baby runs, shall we?

iPhone 4 Waterproof Case Test (Video)

TiPb did a waterproof torture test comparing the Overboard and Aquapac iPhone 4 cases.

From TiPb:

Aquapac vs Overboard

Truth be told these two cases are very similar. Both are clear plastic that retains the capacitive touch so you can keep using your iPhones while they’re inside. (At least when you’re out of the water — no capacitive touch can work when you’re under water). This means you can still make calls, record video, check the web, etc. with ease. Read more

iPhone 3G Speed Test: iOS 4.0 versus iOS 4.1 (Video)

Lifehacker has a video comparing the speed of the iPhone 3G running iOS 4.0 and 4.1. It looks like the iPhone 3G has some good speed improvements in 4.1, but still significantly slower than what you’ll get from an iPhone 4 or 3GS.

  • Maps: iOS 4.1 Wins (By a Lot)

Apple Launches ‘Coming Soon’ Page for iOS 4.2 for iPad

Apple has created a “Coming Soon” site for iOS 4.2 for iPad. This update will finally bring multitasking, folders, a unified inbox in Mail and many other great features we’ve been enjoying on the iPhone since iOS 4.0. One of the major additions to this version will be the ability to print directly to a printer on a wireless network from your iPad. Although I think printing something to paper is archaic, this is a feature that many iPad users have been requesting ever since the launch.

A feature in iOS 4.2 that I’m looking forward to is the ability to find text on web pages in Safari. This is something I use all the time on my computer, and I’m excited Apple is bringing it to the iPad.

iOS 4.2 will be available sometime in November for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

Skyfire Submits Flash Video Playing iPhone Browser

Skyfire is an iPhone browser which lets you play Flash video from sites like Comedy Central. It was submitted to the app store today and should get approved because it doesn’t actually run the Flash on the iPhone, it translates the Flash video on their server and streams it to the iPhone using an Apple-approved HTML 5 format.

Skyfire’s famed cloud-computing technology translates Flash video on the fly from millions of web sites into HTML5 formats, and supports iOS devices via Apple’s HTTP live streaming standard. Skyfire also avoids the concerns raised in Steve Jobs’ recent essay regarding Flash on mobile devices. By optimizing Flash for iPhones and network conditions in the Cloud, Skyfire improves performance and maximizes battery life while playing video.
