Apple Store is Down

The Apple online store is down for maintenance.  There have been rumors of new iMacs, Mac Pros and a new  Cinema Display.  We’ll keep you updated on when the store comes back online.

Inertial Scrolling is Possible on All Apple Laptops

One of the new features in the new MacBook Pros is inertial scrolling, which lets you swipe your fingers up or down on the touchpad and the screen will scroll with momentum depending on how fast or slow you swipe, like the way scrolling is on the iPhone and iPad.  The older MacBook Pro touchpads are also capable of inertial scrolling, but we will have to wait and see if Apple decides to come out with an update to enable this function.  Or you can get this feature with third party software like Smart Scroll.

Henge Docks Creates Docking Stations for the MacBook Line

Henge Docks has created a pretty cool docking station solution for Apple’s MacBooks and MacBook Pros.  I usually like using my laptop screen and a secondary monitor, so this isn’t the best solution for me, but it would be great if I wanted to use my MacBook Pro on my home theater system.

From Henge Docks:

Henge Docks has created the first truly comprehensive docking station solution for Apple’s line of notebook computers. This means you can quickly, easily and cleanly incorporate your MacBook computer into a desktop setup or your home theater system, so you get the best features of a laptop, desktop and media center PC all from one computer. Henge Docks patent-pending design doesn’t require any hardware, software or settings changes to your computer. In fact, every current MacBook is compatible with our system, right from the factory.

iFixit: MacBook Pro 15″ Unibody Core i5 Teardown

iFixit has done a teardown of the mid 2010 MacBook Pro.  Here are a few interesting things they discovered.

  • Apple has stopped using five-point Torx screws found on other MBP 15″ Unibodies in favor of Tri-Wing screws
  • The battery is now rated at 77.5 Wh. That’s just a tad bit more than the 73 Wh battery found in last year’s 15″ model, but not enough to explain the 1-2 hour battery life improvement Apple is claiming for this machine.
  • Sound improvement: Apple changed the design of the speaker assembly slightly, moving from a single plastic enclosure to separate plastic enclosures for the speaker & subwoofer that are connected by the speaker leads.
  • The Wi-Fi/Bluetooth board location has changed to more closely resemble the MacBooks’.  Because of the metal enclosure of the MBP, Apple added an antenna on the opening of the Superdrive!
  • New Intel BD82HM55 S LGZS Platform Controller Hub. – assumed chip is switch between the Intel and NVIDIA graphics.

Apple’s Online Store is Down, MacBook Pro Updates Today

The Apple Store is down this morning, most likely for the MacBook Pro updates that have been rumored lately.  Reports suggest that Apple may be using Intel’s new Core i5-520M (2.4 GHz), i5-540M (2.53 GHz) and i7-620M (2.66 GHz) processors.

RUMOR: MacBook Pro Update Coming Very Soon, Maybe This Week

The above screenshot shows part numbers that Microcenter has received for new Mac systems.  Sources are saying that these part numbers are real and that we should expect new 15″ and 17″ MacBook Pros very soon.

RUMOR: Release of New i7 and i5 MacBooks May be Very Soon

Apple’s MacBooks are overdue for a refresh with Intel’s latest mobile Nehalem processors. A recent report suggests that this refresh may come soon. The report claims that Apple originally wanted to introduce the updated MacBook line in march, but a limited supply of Intel’s 32 nm Arrandale i7, i5 and i3 processors has delayed the launch. Apparently, the processors will make their way into the MacBook Pro, MacBook and MacBook Air shortly.

There hasn’t been an update to the MacBook Pro since June of 2009, so it’s very possible this rumor could be true.
