Apple Announces iOS 4.1 for iPhone

Steve Jobs announced the upcoming release of iOS 4.1 for iPhone and iPod touch. One of the major fixes will be the iPhone 4 proximity sensor issue.  Some new features to iOS 4.1 include HD video upload over WiFi, High Dynamic Range photos, TV show rentals and Apple’s Game Center.

High Dynamic Range photos are created out of a combination of three photos with low, medium and high exposure settings. This makes the photo more clear and vibrant.

Game Center, originally revealed for iOS 4, is another key feature of iOS 4.1 which allows users to add friends, play against friends and do all sorts of social gaming stuff on their iPhone. iOS 4.1 will be available for download via iTunes next week.

Custom Dictionary Additions Discovered in iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 4

On iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4, within the Keyboard section of the Settings menu, Apple has added an option called “Edit User Dictionary.”  This is a feature I’ve been wanting for a long time, the ability to edit and add words to the iPhone’s automated word recognition dictionary.  Currently the only way to add custom words or abbreviations is to deliberately skip recommended corrections, but this new feature will let you manually enter words you want accepted. This will also let you delete specific words from being included in the recognition dictionary.  There are some misspelled words I’ve accidentally accepted, and the only way to delete them in the current iPhone OS is to delete the entire custom dictionary.

iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 4 Has AT&T Tethering Support

Internet tethering is a feature that has been available on the iPhone since OS 3.0, but blocked by AT&T.  iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4, which was released to developers earlier today, has a new message that hints that AT&T tethering may be coming soon.

But if you’re like me and don’t feel like waiting for AT&T to offer this feature that they already allow on many of their other phones, just jailbreak it and install MyWi.

New Features Uncovered in iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 3

Apple released iPhone OS 4.0 beta 3 to developers earlier today and Boy Genius Report has already found a few changes.

From Boy Genius Report:

File Sharing

Yes, you read that right. Apple is finally going to allow you to transfer files to and from your iPhone straight from your computer. It works like this: You plug your iPhone into iTunes, head on over to the Apps page and scroll down. From there you’ll be able to drag files to and from your iPhone and your computer. We have not been able to get the feature to work as of yet, but it seems a lock that support will be enabled for more than the Mail app. That is if this feature makes it past the development stage.

Gmail Archive Added to iPhone OS 4

It’s easy to set up your Gmail account to archive emails instead of deleting them on Mail for iPhone, but it looks like they’ve now incorporated the archive feature into OS 4.

From 9 to 5 Mac:

For you Gmail folks out there: Apple still loves you!

They’ve gone ahead and added your ever-so-favorite archive feature to the native mail application. This feature archives your Gmail messages for later viewing vs. just deleting your emails.  Google has plenty of space!

To archive, just swipe on the message like you’d normally do to delete. For those wondering, we took a picture with our HD Camera because Apple decided to add another new feature to iPhone OS 4 in beta 2: Screenshots that don’t work.
