RUMOR: Verizon iPhone Has N92 Codename

John Gruber of Daring Fireball has some new information to add to the Verizon iPhone rumors.  He says that the device is codenamed N92 and is already at the Engineer Validation Test stage, which is two steps below production.  If this is true, it helps support the many rumors that there will be a Verizon iPhone this January.

From Daring Fireball:

I don’t know anything about negotiations with Verizon, and I doubt anyone does other than the highest-level executives at both companies. But I do know that engineering-wise, the wheels are turning on N92, the CDMA variant of the iPhone 4. It’s certainly not in production yet, and hasn’t reached DVT status (device verification test — like Gray Powell’s infamous stolen unit), but it is, a few little birdies claim, at EVT (engineering verification test). That’s one step below DVT, which is one step below production. So it’s right about where you’d think it would be if it were scheduled to go on sale in January. The CDMA iPhone is no longer a cold storage, keep-it-alive-just-in-case-we-need-it project.

RUMOR: Verizon iPhone Due in January

From TechCrunch:

Sources with knowledge of this entire situation have assured me that Apple has submitted orders for millions of units of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets for a Verizon iPhone run due in December. This production run would likely be for a January launch, and I’d bet the phone is nearly 100% consistent with the current iPhone 4.

I can’t say with 100% accuracy that an iPhone will hit Verizon store shelves in January, but all of the signals point that way, and it would give Verizon’s CEO some interesting things to talk about in hisCES keynote (though he may have to refrain as CES comes before Apple’s typical January keynote). I may be proven wrong, but based on my history dealing with components and selling to Apple, a Verizon-compatible iPhone looks to be a done deal.

Verizon iPhone Rumors Spark as Foxconn Plans New Factory

Foxconn is building a new factory dedicated primarily to iPhone production.  This has started new rumors that the iPhone will be coming to other US carriers like Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile.  In May, DigiTimes reported that Apple placed orders for 10 million CDMA iPhones with Pegatron, a subsidiary of ASUStek.  So if that rumor was true, this new Foxconn factory may not be for CDMA iPhones, but instead just to help meet the demand for the current GSM version, which has been available in limited quantities since launch.

Apple Has Verizon Cell Towers on Their Campus

More Verizon iPhone rumors have been spreading since Apple’s Q&A during their iPhone press conference on Friday.

From MacRumors:

Multiple sites have noted that during today’s iPhone 4 press conference, Apple CEO Steve Jobs mentioned that the company has cell towers for both AT&T and Verizon on its campus, unsurprisingly sparking speculation that the existence of a Verizon cell site supports hopes of future support for the carrier on Apple’s portable devices.

While several of these sites have indicated that Apple is unlikely to have invested in the Verizon cell tower infrastructure if it wasn’t using it to test Verizon-compatible devices on its campus, the reverse is actually true — carriers pay considerable sums of money to private landowners for the right to erect towers on their property.

This certainly isn’t to say that Apple isn’t testing Verizon-compatible equipment on its campus, but to suggest that the mere existence of a Verizon tower is evidence in favor of it is simply reading too much into things.

RUMOR: Apple to Announce Verizon iPhone Tomorrow

There have been many rumors going around this year of a Verizon iPhone coming soon.  Two of the more substantial rumors were in May about Landor Associates working on Verizon iPhone ads and the order placed by Apple to Pegatron for 10 million CDMA iPhones.

Yesterday I mentioned that Apple may announce a Verizon iPhone at their press conference on Friday. Although that was just a guess, we are now getting information from a source close to Verizon that this may actually be true.  Our source says that “Apple and Verizon have been in close talks for a few months now”, and that it is “inevitable that the iPhone will be available on Verizon no later than Q1 2011″ and maybe even sooner.

Apple to Hold iPhone 4 Press Conference Friday

UPDATE: We have new information about a Verizon iPhone announcement.

Apple is holding a press conference to a select group of media representatives this Friday, the 16th.  No details have been given except that it’s a “press conference about iPhone 4.”  Maybe they are announcing that it’s coming to Verizon….just a guess.

RUMOR: Verizon Launching iPhone in January

Bloomberg is claiming that the iPhone will come to Verizon this January.

From Bloomberg:

Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. mobile-phone company, will start selling Apple Inc.’s iPhone next year, ending AT&T Inc.’s exclusive hold on the smartphone in the U.S., two people familiar with the plans said.

The device will be available to customers in January, according to the people, who declined to be named because the information isn’t public. Brenda Raney, a spokeswoman for Verizon Wireless, didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment. Natalie Kerris, an Apple spokeswoman, and Peter Thonis, a Verizon Communications Inc. spokesman, declined to comment.

More Rumors of iPhone 4 Coming to Verizon

Boy Genius Report sums up the latest rumors from analysts about iPhone 4 coming to Verizon.

From BGR:

Analysts are contributing in tandem to the rumor mill today by proclaiming the inevitability of a Verizon Wireless-branded iPhone. First is Ben Reitzes of Barclays Capital, who says a Verizon Wireless iPhone could enter production in Q4 2010 and land in the first calendar quarter of 2011. Reitzes estimates that Verizon could sell as many as 9 million iPhones next year and anticipates a market in Asia for this CDMA variant of the iPhone 4. Not alone in the latest chapter of this seeming endless rumor, Bank of America/Merrill Lynch analyst Scott Craig points to the success of the iPhone in unlocked markets as an important factor in bringing Apple and Verizon Wireless together at last. With the iPhone on the nation’s largest carrier, Craig predicts Apple could sell an additional 8 million handsets in FY 2011. So what do you think — will the allure of selling an additional 8-9 million handsets be enough to finally make Apple and Verizon Wireless work together to make the CDMA iPhone a reality?

Verizon Spokesman Says No iPhone Plans in Immediate Future (Video)

Verizon spokesman John Johnson says that the company is not planning to carry the iPhone in the immediate future.

Q: Let me ask you first of all about Verizon and the iPhone. What is happening, if anything? What is the status?

A: No one ever asks that question. (Smiles) So, no plans to carry the iPhone in the immediate future, but you’ve gotta look at the incredible excitement around the Android devices…

Even if Verizon is getting the iPhone soon, they probably wouldn’t be allowed to say anything about it yet.  So I wouldn’t take this statement as confirmation that it’s not coming to Verizon sometime this year.   Johnson’s statement could just be a way of avoiding the question.  Hopefully we’ll find out more on Monday at WWDC 2010.

RUMOR: Verizon Launching Simultaneous Voice and Data Network for Next iPhone

There is a new Verizon iPhone rumor today from Boy Genius Report.  One of their “Verizon guys” says that Verizon has been testing VoRA, which would allow simultaneous voice and data, as a precursor to VoLTE.  So I guess they are thinking Verizon is doing this for the next iPhone.  It could be true, but I don’t think it’s a very strong rumor.

From Boy Genius Report:

One of our Verizon guys hit us up with some pretty interesting news. We have been told that when the mythical Verizon iPhone materializes, assuming it’s not a LTE unit, it might launch with VoRA; Voice over Rev. A. According to our source, Verizon has been testing VoRA as a precursor to VoLTE, and as long as the network upgrade timeline and iPhone release are aligned, we should see this happen. If it happens.
