iOS 7 will be “very, very flat” according to a 9to5Mac source. I hope this rumor is false because I think it would be a dumb move to abandon the beautiful interface in the current version of iOS for a flat 1980s look of Windows Phone.

According to multiple people who have either seen or have been briefed on the upcoming iOS 7, the operating system sports a redesigned user-interface that will be attractive to new iOS users, but potentially unsettling for those who are long-accustomed to the platform…

The new interface is said to be “very, very flat,” according to one source. Another person said that the interface loses all signs of gloss, shine, and skeuomorphism seen across current and past versions of iOS. Another source framed the new OS as having a level of “flatness” approaching recent releases of Microsoft’s Windows Phone “Metro” UI.

The Wall Street Journal claims that Apple will begin production of its next iPhone during the current quarter, and that the device could launch as early as this summer. The report also says Apple will be launching a less expensive version of the iPhone, which will also launch this year.

I wouldn’t put much trust in this report, considering the fact that The Wall Street Journal is often wrong on Apple rumors. Plus, the rumor of a less expensive iPhone doesn’t even make sense. You can already get the iPhone 4 for free with a two year contract, and most likely the iPhone 4S will become free when the iPhone 5S comes out.

From WSJ:

Apple Inc. plans to begin production of a refreshed iPhone similar in size and shape to its current one in the second quarter of the year, according to people familiar with the device’s production, teeing up a possible summer launch for the next version of its flagship device.

At the same time, Apple continues to work with its manufacturing partners in Asia on a less expensive iPhone that could be launched as soon as the second half of this year, these people said. The four-inch device will likely use a different casing from the higher-end iPhone. Apple has been working on different color shells for the phone but its plans remain unclear.

According to a new report, Apple will launch a second-generation iPad mini with Retina display in the third quarter of this year. Earlier reports claimed the Retina iPad mini would be released this spring, but I think it’s much more believable that Apple would release it in the fall, about a year after the iPad mini was launched.

Apple really doesn’t have a reason to rush into releasing a new iPad mini since the first-generation device is still selling at a steady pace. The company is expected to ship 55 million iPad mini unites in 2013.

I personally don’t see how wireless charging on the iPhone would be very useful. Sure, it sounds cool, but in reality, it’s just dumb. You still need to plug in the wireless charging device, it’s not like your iPhone will charge automatically when connected to your AirPort Extreme….now that would be awesome.

Apple is planning on running a full version of iOS on the rumored iWatch, according to a report from The Verge.

Interestingly, we’re also told that Apple’s chosen to rework the full iOS to run on the watch instead of building up the iPod nano’s proprietary touch operating system — although the previous nano was already watch-sized and seemed like a great starting point for a watch, Apple’s betting on iOS across product lines.

Bloomberg also reported on an Apple smartwatch, saying it could come as soon as this year.

Features under consideration include letting users make calls, see the identity of incoming callers and check map coordinates, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public. It would also house a pedometer for counting steps and sensors for monitoring health-related data, such as heart rates, this person said.

The image above shows the differences between the size of the iPad 5 and iPad 4. According to these cases, the design of the iPad 5 will have a narrower bezel like the iPad mini.

Case manufacturers are often completely wrong with these leaks, so I wouldn’t put too much trust in claim. But I think it would make a lot of sense for Apple to make the iPad 5 look like the iPad mini, because that’s a pretty sexy device.

A patent application discovered by AppleInsider describes a “bracelet” accessory with a wraparound design where the screen would cover the entire outer surface. The word “watch” isn’t used in the patent application, but the “wearable video device” described could clearly be used as an advanced wristwatch that communicates with your iPhone.

Apple first filed its application for a “Bi-stable spring with flexible display” with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in August of 2011, describing a wearable accessory device that can be easily worn on a user’s wrist or other body part. When active, the unit connects to a portable device via various communications protocols like Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to show relevant information in real time on a flexible display that can wrap fully around a user’s wrist. While the device itself can conform to nearly any appendage, a suitable location would be a user’s wrist.

Photos posted on Chinese site WeiPhone show what is claimed to be the rear shell of a second-generation iPad mini. The shell seems to be similar to the current iPad mini, except thicker. A thicker back could support rumors that the next iPad mini will feature a Retina display, since the third-generation iPad became a little thicker when it got Retina support.

My guess is it’s just the casing for an iPad mini knockoff that you’ll find in fake Apple stores in China. At least I hope it’s not the real thing, because the current iPad mini looks way better.
